Weaving Viondos on the Second Day of Training in Kibera

In the heart of Kibera, a vibrant and resilient community in Nairobi, Kenya, a remarkable transformation is taking place. Elderly individuals, often overlooked and underestimated, are coming together to learn the art of weaving viondos (baskets) on the second day of their training program. This initiative is not only about acquiring a new skill; it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the elderly and the power of community support.

Kibera is known for its challenges, including overcrowding, inadequate sanitation, and limited access to education and healthcare. These hardships disproportionately affect the elderly, who often face isolation and neglect. However, the Inua wazee weaving project is changing this narrative. The training sessions, held in a modest community centre, are a symbol of hope. Elders gather here, eager to learn and share their wisdom. The art of weaving viondos not only provides a source of income but also fosters a sense of purpose and camaraderie.

On this second day of training, the elders are deepening their understanding of weaving techniques. Skilled instructors guide them through each step, from selecting the right materials to crafting intricate patterns. The room is filled with laughter and encouragement, demonstrating the power of  bonding.Beyond the practical skills,  Inua wazee weaving program emphasises the importance of preserving traditional knowledge. Elders play a pivotal role in passing down cultural heritage to younger generations. As they create viondos, they also weave stories of their lives, imparting wisdom and values to the community.

These viondos are more than baskets; they are a testament to resilience, creativity, and unity. They carry not only fruits and vegetables but also the hopes and dreams of Kibera’s elderly population. With each stitch, the elders are rewriting their stories and proving that it’s never too late to learn, grow, and contribute. As the sun sets over Kibera, the second day of training comes to an end. The viondos may be unfinished, but the journey of empowerment and transformation is well underway. Inua wazee weaving mission to empower the elderly is a beacon of light in Kibera, inspiring communities around the world to recognise and honour the wisdom of their elders.
